Do not know why i should think about the weight of my bike, cause anyway i bought one that weighs the least of all.So if you have a heavy bike, do not spend too much money to make it weigh less, sell it and buy another.

The author has it right here. Rotational weight is the most critical. Imagine spinning a weight at the end of a two foot string. At the same speed it takes much more ENERGY to spin a 5 pound weight than a 2 pound weight. Einstein proved it: Energy is mass is weight. They are interchangeable. I experienced it first hand when I took my buddie’s bike out for a ride just after riding mine. His bike is 2 pounds heavier than mine, but faster because his wheels are lighter.

Also, rolling resistance counts alot against you. If you can deal with it, get a tight tread with a nice V profile. The closer the treads are the less friction you will create. Keep them as hard as you can without losing control and you will roll.

Cassettes are ridiculously heavy - go hollow core and save a full pound.

Saving weight near your center of gravity is the WORST place to try to save weight. It does not transfer to much in savings (speed). Why do road bikers keep their pack and water bottles on the seat? It’s the center of gravity and it doesn’t make much difference. Keep the comfy seat and spend the money where it matters.

i’ve been riding nearly 25 years and i have seen mountain bikes evolve into the highly specific technical machines they are. shedding weight and upgrading your bike is really a great way to improve and customize your ride. the most important thing to consider is what type of riding you will do. if you’re a gravity rider no sense in getting a superlight wheelset only to have them fail. so strength becomes more important when doing this type of riding, but when it comes to XC riding shedding weight cam drastically improve the bike and overall improve your experience. with that being said i’ve found that upgrading moving parts with the best sealed bearing parts is key. the whole feel of your ride basically comes from your nubs. if you have a nice set of hubs laced to a lightweight rim your bike will glide. with that in mind a good headset will give you that sport tuned feel. next on the upgrade list are cranks. cheaper cranks will be heavy and flex. good lightweight, stiff cranks will transfer energy to your wheels better. it also gives your bike a solid feel. and finally, but not lastly, are the forks. if you’re looking for light weight get and air-sprung shock. and look for something that can handle the bumps but more importantly look for a fork that is stiff. this will also add to the sport tuned feel of your bike. nothing worse than a sloppy front end, it’s like riding a an old cushy recliner. look for a sub4 lbs fork. i think these are the best upgrades to start. once you have these down you can start saving grams here and there and stuff like bolts, clamps, posts and stems. before you know it, you’ll have a custom sub 25lbs bike that will take you to that next level of riding.
