The sad news in the bike community this week is that Richard Burke, founder of Trek Bikes, has passed away at the age of 73 due to complications arising from heart surgery. Burke was a father of five children, all of whom have worked for Trek at some point including son John, who has served as President since 1997.
Burke founded Trek in 1976, and drove the company to become one of the largest and most recognized bike brands in the world. Trek and its associated brands, Gary Fisher, Klein, and LeMond, currently sell over 1.5 million bikes per year, and Trek employs over 1,600 employees. Burke was one of the great business minds in cycling, and through Trek has had a significant impact on the sport we know today.
Our thoughts and sympathies go to Burke’s wife, children, and grandchildren.
